The new pump house supplying water to the community

The Tanzania project team completed a successful remote implementation of drilling one borehole and installing a solar pump with a tank house.

August 2021

The Tanzania project team is planning a remote implementation with the goal of drilling two boreholes for the community before the end of the year. The boreholes will be fitted with handpumps on this first implementation trip, enabling the community to use them prior to a mechanical pump being installed. The team, in cooperation with our NGO partners, will employ two independent contractor teams to facilitate the drilling and oversight of the project. Pending a successful borehole installation, the first phase of the project will be finished, providing the community with a secondary source of drinking water. The second phase of the project will include building storage, filtration, and distribution of the water sourced from the community’s boreholes.

December 2020

While our HPC team was been unable to travel to Tanzania due to Covid-19 restrictions, our NGO partners, Little Voice and Rehoboth Harvest Ministries, were able to visit the community on a sanitation-education based implementation trip. The NGO team delivered much needed supplies to community in the form of face coverings, hand sanitizer, wash stands, and hand soap. While in the community, the NGO team presented short seminars on general hygiene & other standard precautions to prevent the spread of infections. Posters highlighting good hygienic practices were left in shared areas in the community such as the local tap stand and the community clinic. Flash card games which teach WASH education were left at the local school for the children. This implementation trip was important to ensure the community is doing everything they can to keep themselves healthy!

May 2019

The Ndaleta travel team returned to Connecticut this past May following a successful assessment trip to Tanzania. The trip was finalized with the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the community partners. On this trip, valuable technical data was collected to facilitate the drilling of a borehole in the community. Surveys of the community were conducted to establish a statistical baseline for current water usage and general health.

In Ndaleta, the need for water is especially dire during the dry season. Some families wake up as early as 2 a.m. to head for the local borehole, which many residents describe as 'salty' and 'painful to the stomach.' Others travel up to 15 hours each day, leading their herds of goats and cattle to fill meager amounts of drinking water from an unfiltered dam to bring home to their families. Yet others, who are unable to collect water themselves, have no other option but to pay 10 times the cost of the borehole price to have water delivered to their homes.

August 2018

As of August 7th, 2018, the Hartford Professional Chapter will be partnering with the community of Ndaleta, Tanzania to facilitate the construction of a bore-hole and water distribution system. Over the course of the next 5 years, the HPC will provide the engineering skills and resources needed to improve access to potable water in the community. We are looking forward to working with our new project partners and making a lasting impact in Ndaleta. For more information about how you can get involved, please reach out!
